Bluff StrOKES PAINT OUT 2019

See dubuque through artists' eyes!

 

Sixty plein air (in open air) artists from 14 states will paint Dubuque scenes Sunday, Oct. 6 - Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019.  At the end of the week we will display the paintings in historic Steeple Square in downtown Dubuque.  We will award $10,000 in prize money and the finished work will be ready for sale! This is an exciting opportunity to see your community anew through the eyes of artists. Check their websites for examples of their work. You will see a variety of styles and media.

Bluff Strokes 2019 will run October 6 to 12. Watch for more information in this space. For planning, our sales will be:

Friday Patron Preview Party (6 to 9 pm). Admission cost TBA.

Saturday Public Sale (9 am to 6 pm).

Sales will again take place at Steeple Square, 15th and White Streets.

Our 2019 Juror - greg Summers

Greg Summers, Overland Park, Kansas . A Master Engraver and former professional artist at Hallmark, Greg now paints primarily “en Plein Air” across the globe with a limited pallet of 4 colors. He is a Signature member of the American Impressionists Society and the Outdoor Painter Society. His work has been published in numerous magazines, including Plein Air, Southwest Art, Outdoor Painter, American Art Collector, and Fine Arts Conoisseur. Greg is co-founder of the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society and Brush Creek Plein Air, a paint out in Kansas City. He has both participated in and judged many plein air competitions across the country.

Bluff Strokes HOME base - Steeple Square

A Dubuque icon since 1867, the former home of St. Mary’s Parish is being restored as a community and event center.  Steeple and stained glass windows restoration are in progress.  The former church, now the Steeple Square Community Event Center, will be home base for Bluff Strokes. 

 
 

 

Special 2018 Guest - Rose Frantzen

Demo and Critique for artists - Wednesday evening

Rose's demo and critiques were the highlight of the week for many artists.

 
Rose Frantzen paints figurative, representational, and allegorical works in oil and multimedia. “Portrait of Maquoketa,” a collection of 180 portraits of her townspeople, was exhibited at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, and is now part of the Figge Art Museum permanent collection. She is a three time winner in the International Portrait Competition of the Portrait Society of America, and won the 2016 and 2018 People's Choice Awards. Rose lives in Maquoketa, Iowa, just 25 minutes south of Dubuque, where you can find her work, along with that of her husband, Chuck Morris, in their Old City Hall Gallery.
