Talking About Art: Women Religious Artists in the Dubuque Area
September 4
Noon-1PM
Speaker: K Kriesel
Catholic sisters and nuns, also called women religious, working as professional artists have been uniquely distinct from secular and other religious artists both because they live in community and also because of their three vows: poverty, chastity, and obedience. Women religious artists had access to arts education before secular women, and went on to teach future generations. Each artist among them is distinct and yet shares the commonalities of religious life, influencing their local arts communities while also set apart from them. K Kriesel, local artist and associate of the Sisters of Charity, will provide a presentation on how Catholic nuns and sisters in the Dubuque area have helped shape the local arts community and what we can learn from their stories. All are welcome to participate in this conversation, as there is much to learn from this distinct group of artists.
Talking About Art explores themes in philosophy of art, art history, and more. Bring your lunch. We’ll provide cookies and coffee.

Dubuque Rendezvous - Project Art for Nature: Earth, Sky, Water, Fire
Group Exhibit at Bluff Strokes Art Center as part of Dubuque Rendezvous!
Opening Reception Friday, June 26 5-8PM with an Artist Talk at 6PM
Addressing the classical elements of earth, air, fire, water as metaphor, but also as embodied actual forces in nature, this exhibit offers an exploration of the relationship between natural elements that give rise to, support and shape life and ecosystems, and how life, in turn, affects the elements. Extending the metaphor, we hope to engender inquiry and insight into how we humans, as beings intertwined in nature, affect natural processes, including our climates. As part of nature, we promote ethics of respect, protection, restoration and sharing of all resources that benefit our human communities and those of others (plants, animals, fungi and microbes) and the homes we share. We wish to engender a sense of awe and wonder; to express gratitude for all that nature provides; to celebrate the ephemeral being-ness we share with all life on this precious planet.

Rainy Day Movie: Between The Folds
June 5, 2026, 12-1:00pm
Join us for a showing of PBS’ Between the Folds. A documentary on the science of art and the art of science via the art of Origami.
BETWEEN THE FOLDS chronicles the stories of 10 fine artists and intrepid scientist who abandoned careers and scoffed at hard-earned graduate degrees-all to forge unconventional lives as modern day paperfolders. The film paints an arresting portrait of the remarkable artistic and scientific creativity that fuels this ever-changing art form, fusing science and sculpture, form and function, ancient and new. As these offbeat and provocative characters converged on the unusual medium of origami, they reinvent an ancient art, and demonstrate the innumerable ways that ingenuity and expression come to bear as we all struggled to understand and honor the world around us-as artists, scientists, creators, collaborators, preservers and simply curious beings.
